The environmentalists are winning. They are winning the PR campaign that would have you believe their shear arrogance that the world is coming to an end and life as we know it is going to cease. Such is the extent of the environmental movements success in this arena that the UN is issuing reports telling us that the effects of man are having a severe negative impact on our global environment.
Global Warming is the alter at which the environmental movement would have us all bowing before. What shear arrogance these people must have to say that human impact can change the course of mother nature. Now, before you start throwing bombs at me and besieging my position with your rank and file foot soldiers and artillery of mass hysteria, please, please understand me when I say, I am not abdicating any responsibility or declaring that we should go on as we are. Far from it, I believe in being a good steward in regards to the planet, and we'll get more into that later. However, I am asserting that the alarmism is not warranted, it's not truthful, and it's extremely arrogant.
You are probably asking yourself, well, how can you say such a thing? The facts shout out and are visible to all, the polar bears are drowning and they are eating each other, the snows of Kilimanjaro are vanishing, glaciers are melting, the snows of our youth are no longer, it's been years since a white Christmas and you tout that as evidence of a global warming epidemic. I concede that all these things are happening, you will here no argument on these "facts" from me. Nevertheless, the fact of the matter is that the reasons for these occurrences are not known for sure. Just as we don't know why some years the hurricane season is long and storm intensity is great and some years the season is short and the storms are weak. Some years the summers are wet and rainy and others they are dry and drought filled. Some years El Nino is stronger than others. Just as we don't know why these other patterns come and go, so too is it pure speculation on gloabl warming. The global warming scientists and high priests of the cult can try to say as loudly as possible that it's because of carbon in the atmosphere, but that is no more guaranteed than the fact that the earth is flat.
Remember many generations ago when the conventional wisdom or the public relations word of today, "consensus" was that the earth was flat and Christopher Columbus was sailing off on a suicide mission? What we really know about science is that the consensus or conventional wisdom is almost always proven wrong. At one time we believed that the earth was the center of the universe and the sun rotated around us as the focal point of the universe. While we've come a long way and advanced greatly since those times, the point is still the same, the consensus can be and often is wrong.
While there is a "public" consensus that the earth is going through a period of warming, the rate and devastation of that warming is to be questioned. In a recent interview, Jennifer Marohasy, a biologist and senior fellow of Melbourne-based think tank the Institute of Public Affairs noted that the earth is actually not warming. When asked "Is the Earth still warming?" she replied: "No, actually, there has been cooling, if you take 1998 as your point of reference. If you take 2002 as your point of reference, then temperatures have plateaued. This is certainly not what you'd expect if carbon dioxide is driving temperature because carbon dioxide levels have been increasing but temperatures have actually been coming down over the last 10 years." In fact this is not even a matter of controversy, she goes on to point out, "The head of the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) has actually acknowledged it. He talks about the apparent plateau in temperatures so far this century. So he recognises that in this century, over the past eight years, temperatures have plateaued ... This is not what you'd expect, as I said, because if carbon dioxide is driving temperature then you'd expect that, given carbon dioxide levels have been continuing to increase, temperatures should be going up ... So (it's) very unexpected, not something that's being discussed. It should be being discussed, though, because it's very significant."

While there is no question that we must become much better stewards of the earth and mother nature, the idea that we can cause a climactic doomsday that will change the earth and how we inhabit it seems to be the height of arrogance. We must find alternative fuels for our vehicles and invest much more heavily in public transportation, for the sake of the environment and for the sake of taking profits from the coffers of middle east dictators and global terrorists. We must start by thinking first of conservation and second of profit margins. We shouldn't build products to last a short time to be thrown away and new ones purchased as we do now with DVD players, televisions, watches, computers, Ipods and so many others. We must try to fix things and not put so much into land fills. We must recycle where it is prudent and where it is cost effective. Tree's grow back and paper is biodegradable, as long as we are being responsible with our logging industry and replant what we cut down, we need not be so hell bent on wasting resources recycling paper that could be used to recycle or repair other items. We should work on keeping our water supplies clean and not dumping toxins and pollutants into streams, rivers, and lakes. We need to work on alternative fuels that do not take agricultural products out of our food supply or require as much energy to produce as they themselves put out. There is much that can be done better and we should make every effort to do so.
The basic premise is that yes, we have been irresponsible with our planet and yes we must do better, but please remember that it's not because some arrogant cult leader tells you that the sky is falling and you should run like chicken little. It's because it's the right thing to do, when and where we can afford to do it. To not do so would be equally as arrogant.
